Description

The project focused on Broward County, Florida, which encompasses Fort Lauderdale and 30 adjacent cities and has a population close to 1.8 million people. In 2000, the community’s voters approved creating the Children’s Services Council (CSC), an independent tax district that uses community indicators and performance measures to advocate for improving children’s quality of life, and to provide the resources necessary for their healthy development into adulthood. In addition to presenting its data publicly, CSC uses a variety of tools such as community wide summits and budget forums to ensure that scarce resources support the community’s priorities. This project represents a variety of lessons learned, including: the value of community planning and data to guide action to address community needs, the importance of supporting leaders who see the value of data and work to create the necessary community changes, and that collaborative funding as well as actions taken by community partners that do not require funding, is vital to making community-wide improvements. There is much to learn from the project and the challenges it still faces are indicative of the ongoing, ever-evolving process of integration projects.
