Description

The Pelican Island Audubon Society initiated this project in 2007 to encourage the county commissioners and the community leaders to think about how they would attain a sustainable quality of life. They have claimed they want to be sustainable but never progressed past a county compreheneive plan done many years ago. Pelican Island Audubon Society leaders took the initiative, formed an advisory group, conducted focus groups and workshops in many parts of the county, and gathered ideas for indicator categories and sources for data bases. We are now about to open up a web site, invite community responses to a short survey, and develop a much more detailed county wide survey to determine a useful list of indicators. We are exploring ways to link to the many data bases — economic, social and environmental — we know to exist in county, regional and state agencies and in the hands of other NGOs. We are also looking to the local schools and colleges for help in gathering and examining available data bases for their value to this project.
