Description
Vital Signs is part of a Community Foundations of Canada program which sees Vital Signs reports published each year in many Canadian communities. The Vital Signs report is a periodic check-up that measures the quality of life in Canadian communities, identifies trends, and shares opportunities for action.
What does it measure?
We consider the following issue areas for inclusion in the analysis:
- Community
- Environment
- Belonging and Leadership
- Arts, culture and Recreation
- Economy and work
- Getting around
- Health
- Housing
- Safety
- Learning
- wealth and poverty
What areas are covered?
We publish three or four key indicators in each issue area. The focus is on the City of Medicine Hat however, much of the information is available on a regional basis. Therefore many of the indicators reflect the quality life in Southeastern Alberta.
How does it work?
In addition to detailed statistical analysis and data mining, the Community Foundation engages the community in a consultative process that provides a subjective sense of our community’s progress as it relates to each of these issue areas. Oversight of the entire project is provided by a committee of community experts including Community Foundation Board Members.
What makes vital signs different?
The power of this report is in its accessibility. We hire research experts for the statistical analysis, and the final report is written in a way that makes it interesting, understandable, engaging, and above all, actionable for everyone living in our community.
How is it used?
Experience here and in other communities has shown that the Vital Signs report is an important discussion piece for the community and provides much needed clarity around the current, potential, and perceived issues facing our citizens. It invariably becomes a key tool for many different groups working for the betterment of our community.
