Description

The agenda of San Angelo Social Health Indexing Project is to develop a series of indices for use by a variety of community stakeholders.

The flagship of the project is the San Angelo Social Health Index which has been published since 2008. This index tracks 18 indicators of general community interest using the year 2000 as a baseline. The indicators focus on three domains: 1) conditions for children and the elderly, 2) household conditions, and 3) general economic and social conditions.

A second product of the project was published for the first time in 2010. The Children of the Concho Valley Social Health Index also uses the year 2000 as a baseline for data collection and tracking. Twenty-one indicators are focused on the educational, economic, health and safety conditions of youth in the 13 county Concho Valley region of Texas. The index also includes indicators of juvenile crime in San Angelo, the region’s metropolitan population center.

Two other community indices for the project are in the works. In collaboration with the San Angelo branch of the Laura W. Bush Institute for Women’s Health, a Concho Valley Women’s Index is now under construction. Also the project will produce a San Angelo Neighborhood Development Index in collaboration with the City of San Angelo.
