Date: 2012
Abstract: Place matters for health in important ways. Neighborhood conditions—such as the quality of public schools; the age, density, and size of housing; availability of medical care and healthy foods; availability of good jobs; levels of exposure to environmental degradation and violence; and availability of exercise options—powerfully predict who is healthy, who is sick, and who lives longer. This study examined the relationships between place, race/ethnicity, and health in Baltimore, MD and attempted to address specific questions raised by the Baltimore Place Matters Team: • What is the relationship between the racial/ethnic and socioeconomic composition of Baltimore communities and access to healthy and unhealthy food sources? • What is the relationship between the racial/ethnic and socioeconomic composition of Baltimore communities and the housing conditions in which residents live? • What is the relationship between neighborhood access to healthy and unhealthy foods and health outcomes? • What is the relationship between neighborhood housing conditions and health outcomes?
